Logo design is an art in of itself, and although our logo may look simple, there’s a lot of thought that has gone into it. First off, a little history about our name…

To us, “Geeks4Peace” signifies a collection of people who are passionate about helping others, almost to the point that were too helpful (almost). Our passion drives our daily thoughts, words, and actions.

Looking closely at our logo, the word “Geeks” is behind or beneath the number 4, which is behind the word “Peace.” Geeks refer to our members (of course). The number 4 has significance in a number of ways, and in this context refers to our mission. ”Peace” is defined at wikipedia as “a quality describing a society or a relationship that is operating harmoniously.” This signifies that the individuals who make up our membership base understand the need to place the mission of peace above ourselves as individuals in the long run.

Looking even more closely at the logo, one may notice that the “G4P” in the logo could be personified to an extent. Originally, the design and layout was to emulate a person sitting in front of a computer. However, it could be viewed as someone sitting and praying or meditating (or perhaps a person reading a magazine while using the toilet…depending on your disposition).

As Geeks4Peace.org grows, the use of subdomains will highlight that we believe in putting the community before ourselves. For example, the local branch site of Geeks4Peace.org for Annapolis, Maryland, is annapolis.geeks4peace.org. In this case, Annapolis is the subdomain, which is placed before our main domain Geeks4Peace.org.

Furthermore, member profiles are listed as trailing directories, such as geeks4peace.org/admin. This indicates that we put our cause before ourselves (and the community before our cause).

As we move forward, we look forward to feedback from you on how we can grow and better serve our community!

This site update has been in the works for quite some time now, and it is a bit of an overhaul compared to our last update. Before delving into all of the details, special thanks goes out to those who make this even possible.

First off, credit goes out to the community of developers who make the functionality of this site possible.

Second, our families who have given us life to grow and develop (physiologically and technically) and do what we do each day. We wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for them, so writing (or reading) this very statement would be impossible without them, right?

Third, a special thanks to wikiwave.net for providing inspiration, cooperation, and early funding to promote the development of this site.

Fourth, to you for visiting this site. If you feel so inclined, feel free check out our mission and vision. Though we may be small at the moment, we’ve got big ideas and and bigger dreams. Help us turn those ideas and dreams into actions and accomplishments. Join and participate in discussions on how to better our communities.

~Peace out.

While the term “Geek” is sometimes perceived of as a negative term, we personally believe being a Geek is a very, very good thing.

Close your eyes…now think the word “Geek” inside your head and imagine the first image that comes to mind. Did an image of a wiry, glasses-wearing, pocket-protected, social-dullard come to mind? Ok, now, open your eyes. Or keep them closed, your choice.

Now think about a person in your family or a friend that you know, who has been helpful with fixing computer problems, helping set up audio-video systems, or anything involving an abundance of wires. Does the person you thought about fit the mold for your image of a “Geek”? Perhaps, but perhaps not.

Wikipedia has various definitions for the term Geek. My personal favorite is as follows:

“A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who passionately pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance.”

Geeks come in many forms. I personally consider myself a technology-Geek. I love practically anything to do with technology, almost too much. But it works well for me, as (apparently) there are many people who need help with what I love to do. So it ends up being a win-win, I get to call what I do for fun my “job” and the people I work with get quality support at a very reasonable price.

Personally, I’ve always had a hard time charging people for the work that I do (again, the definition of “work” is relative based on one’s perspective). And I would cringe when I heard people were paying $100+ an hour for support, where often times the tech would be making only 10 to 15% of that (the good computer shops would pay at least 20%, if not more).

I believe that given a number of circumstances, including the current economic climate, the increasing ubiquity of information-availability (with fast, effective search), and the success of online technology ‘wholesalers’ among other variables, the opportunity for a Geek with a skill-set and passion to provide quality support as an independent contractor or business owner is only getting better.

Are you a Geek? Care to make a difference in someone’s life? Alliance or Horde? (Just Kidding, this isn’t Nerds4Peace.)

Contact us or leave a comment and we’ll help find someone who can use your help!
